Brookline SpringFest ’23We hosted a free, family-friendly event celebrating environmental action under the theme “Spring into Climate Action.” Guests enjoyed a variety of activities, including environmental education, lawn games, craft stations, a guided tree identification walk, food, and live music. They explored tables with project information and hands-on activities. Community members of all ages shared recommendations for sensor deployment sites, while an air-quality prize wheel offered fun giveaways. Attendees also contributed feedback on air quality through an interactive whiteboard.

TND Walking ClubWe offered opportunities to learn in depth about the issues facing our neighborhoods and provided training on how to effectively advocate for change. Through neighborhood forums as well as research and advocacy support, we empowered community members to build connections with one another and work toward the changes they wanted to see.

GreenRoots Community Members MeetingWe invited members to our Monthly Members Meeting to connect, share resources, and support one another. We provided information on their rights, heard from spiritual leaders, and offered opportunities for relaxation. Attendees left feeling stronger, supported, and empowered. Our tabling featured assorted information and one-on-one conversations, and the table offered project resources for Chelsea residents to take home.

GreenRoots CSA AQ Event (Chelsea)We offered a monthly vegetable share created specifically for SNAP recipients. Each share included a selection of seasonal organic produce, distributed twice a month, and was fully paid for with monthly HIP benefits. At our table, visitors explored live sensor demonstrations (including one installed in the park), picked up outreach materials, and engaged in welcoming one-on-one conversations about the project’s direction.

TND Information SessionsThe Neighborhood Developers hosted resident services–led informational pop-ups, sharing highlights of their five-year Strategic Plan, including future plans for iSUPER’s air quality monitors. Staff tabled and provided general information about air quality and sensors to residents in low-income housing. Visitors had the opportunity to sit down, learn about the iSUPER project, and ask questions.

TND Tenant Air Quality Engagement EventOur Resident Services team supported all residents in staying in their homes, even under challenging circumstances. We provided access to services and resources that residents wanted and needed to achieve independence, self-sufficiency, personal fulfillment, and overall well-being. Youth-led air quality presentations were delivered to residents at the property sites, followed by focus group sessions where residents responded to prompts related to the design of the data portal.

GreenRoots Data Portal Listening Session #1 Through a partnership with Northeastern University, GreenRoots successfully established a network of hyperlocal air quality monitors in Chelsea and developed a dashboard to display the data. Community sessions were specifically organized to gather input and feedback on the portal’s design. Each session began with an introductory slide presentation about the portal, followed by small-group discussions guided by targeted prompts on interface usability.

Brookline Teen Center Sensor Tour We offered after-school programming for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders five days a week, becoming the primary consistent and affordable option for all middle school students. In partnership with Steps to Success, we welcomed 45 of their youth into our program, expanding access to resources and freeing space in STS programming for elementary students. The program focused on homework completion and a variety of enrichment activities.
Additionally, we led a walking tour with Brookline students to explore air quality sensors “in the wild.” The group visited five different sensor locations, discussing transportation-related, community-related, and operational/mechanical aspects of the sensors. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and share personal takeaways at the conclusion of the engagement.

City of Chelsea Wellness Fair The event celebrated our resilience as a community and supported efforts to become our best selves. A table featured information primarily related to health rather than sensors. Local stakeholder convenings from various organizations attracted attendees of all ages. While the focus was on health, the event also included engaging activities such as Tae Kwon Do demonstrations, a giveaway raffle, and a dance contest.

Chelsea Teen Takeover We offered hands-on activities for youth, such as building a Lego air sensor. Elementary and middle school students participated to learn how sensors work and to try creating their own. The event included a variety of activities and information for youth, along with food, games, and music.

CHA Information Session (Scrivano Apartments) The Prattville/Fitzpatrick Resident Council and the Scrivano Resident Council were joined by iSUPER air quality project members at our property sites. CHA staff and residents received project resources, and GreenRoots contributed with their own informational handouts. Tables featured information on the project, air quality, and sensors. The MGH community van and GreenRoots accompanied the event as we welcomed public housing residents who walked by. Branded NU gear was also distributed as giveaways.

MGH Chelsea Community Research Week The Community Research Program at MGH Chelsea HealthCare Center supported research across the lifespan, emphasizing interdisciplinary collaborations aimed at addressing health disparities, advancing clinical practice, and improving well-being. We presented a poster about the project, circulated it at the research fair, and connected with other professionals in health-related fields.

Data Portal Launch Event with GreenRoots Monthly MeetingThe community was presented with the Data Portal app, eight research poster stations, and three information stations, alongside discussions on proposed air quality bills. The event celebrated the launch of Chelsea’s new air quality dashboard, which provides live data from nearly 100 sensors installed throughout the city. This project and event were conducted in partnership with Northeastern University’s iSuper program.

World Asthma Day RallyA table was set up with project information on air quality and health, with iSUPER sharing the table alongside GreenRoots. Key environmental activists and elected officials attended the event, which took place in the vibrant community of East Boston. Residents of East Boston face significant air quality challenges due to the presence of Logan International Airport, as well as the highways and busy roads that run through their neighborhoods. Emissions from airplanes, trucks, and cars contribute to the health disparities observed in the community.

2025 Chelsea Research Festival Two tables featured informational materials, tablets for interacting with the data portal, and a Lego activity for kids. iSUPER participated alongside a variety of community research electronic posterboards. The Chelsea Research Festival highlighted Chelsea residents’ contributions to science and bridged the gap between the community and research. The festival showcased research either conducted in Chelsea, by Chelsea community members, or both.

La Colaborativa Summer ’25We conducted three separate instructional sessions focused on STEM education and hands-on activities. These included introductory presentations on air quality, Lego air sensor builds, a Dylos air quality scavenger hunt, and data analysis and graphing exercises. Our programs supported youth in reaching their full potential, serving young people facing systemic and socioeconomic barriers by fostering connection, civic engagement, job readiness, leadership development, cultural pride, and career exploration.

GreenRoots MGH IHP Health FairWe hosted a tabling opportunity at GreenRoots’ testing kitchen with the MGH community research team. Chelsea Night OutNational Night Out was more than an annual gathering; it was a celebration of unity, resources, and partnership. We were proud to stand alongside engaged residents and committed partners as we worked together to make Chelsea a safer, stronger, and more connected city. iSUPER team members tabled at the event, distributing project outreach materials to the public, including the data portal flier. The City of Chelsea held the celebration at Williams Middle School, where residents engaged with several city agencies while enjoying pizza, ice cream, and other refreshments.

Brookline Diana Stelin Art Gallery Our Best of Boston summer camp program explored a variety of themes in the art world and introduced participants of all skill levels to a range of materials. Activities included indoor pollutant (dust) collection, NASA Climate Kids environmental education, and labeling index cards to identify sources of pollution.

Chelsea City of JoyiSUPER showcased its van at a community event in Chelsea, organized by GreenRoots. The event offered a full day of health, wellness, fitness, and creativity. Activities included Capoeira, Zumba, holistic therapies, and arts and crafts. Our team educated the public about iSUPER and the iSUPER van.

Chelsea Day The City of Chelsea invited residents to its annual Chelsea Day celebration, highlighting the city’s neighborhoods, businesses, organizations, and community members. CPS students designed t-shirts, staff hosted an information table, and high school students volunteered and fundraised. Our team shared iSUPER resources and educated attendees about the sensory network and iSUPER van.
